Team Everest – Chennai Flood Relief 2015

0

Dear friends,

Chennai is slowly recovering back to its normal state after the unprecedented rain and flood which happened in first week of Dec-2015. While many lost their lives, thousands of people have lost everything which they earned so far in their life.

Many Team Everest volunteers have volunteered at individual level and by partnering with various NGOs for flood relief programs. We thought we can take it to the next level of support.

While the flood was there for few days, the amount of the damage it created would be there for many years to come.

Imagine a small Petti (Kirana) shop owner who has got Rs 50,000 on debt to run his shop. The flood would have damaged his shop completely. Now, he needs to pay his old debut of Rs 50,000 and need another Rs 50,000 to set up a new shop. If that vendor has a son who is going to join college next year, he needs to get additional debt to take care of his son’s need too.

Many individuals and NGO’s acted responsibly by fulfilling their short term needs like food, dress, mats etc. Now, the time has come to think about their long term needs too and start focussing on those areas.

Hence, through Team Everest, we are announcing 3 different initiatives – 1 short term and 2 long term initiatives to help the people who are affected by floods:

1) Chennai School Flood Relief Program: As part of the initiative, we are planning to provide assistance to the students of 3 schools who are affected by flood. The school names are:

  1. Government Higher Secondary School, Thoraipakkam
  2. Government Higher Secondary School, MGR Nagar
  3. Maraimalai Adigal Govt Higher Secondary Schoool, Pallavaram

We are planning to provide the following items based on the funds raised:

  1. 4000 Long size notebooks
  2. 100 School uniforms
  3. 1000 Stationary Kit
  4. Paper for writing tests (For 10th and 12th Std Students) – 125 Ream (1Ream = 500 sheets)

Total Cost for achieving this is Rs 3 Lakhs. If you are interested to donate, you can donate here – www.teameverestindia.org/chennairains2015

Minimum donation amount is Rs 100. For any queries, please whatsapp or call to +91 89399 12365.

2) ‘I am the Change’ Scholarship for Flood affected School Students:

I am the change scholarship is an initiative of Team Everest through which we provide scholarship for single parented and parentless students who are financially poor, good at academics and willing to do their graduation.

We announced about this scholarship during Everest 9th anniversary by Oct, 2015. After the Chennai floods, we decided to allocate 25% of this scholarship slots to flood affected students.

This scholarship is applicable for students who are going to write their Plus-2 examination in March-2016 and would be joining college in 2016.

If you know any students who have lost their parents during the recent flood or those who are badly affected by the flood can apply for this scholarship. We are planning to provide scholarship up to Rs 35,000 per student per year.

Students can apply for this scholarship by calling to +91 89396 12365.

If you are interested to sponsor for this initiative, you can sign up here.

A donor can either donate the full student fees of Rs 35,000 per year as one time donation/monthly donation or pay part of the fees with minimum amount being Rs 100 per month.

For more details about this scholarship program, please check www.iamthechange.in/scholarship.

3) ‘I am the Change’ Fellowship program:

The most heartening thing that happened during the flood period is the amount of love and support that was provided by common people who are called as ‘Volunteers’. The support provided by various individuals and groups are beyond words. Hats off!

As someone rightly said, there were more volunteers than victims in many places!

Imagine the amount of impact we can create if some of these volunteers can continue to help the flood affected people for the period of next 2 years. We can help many people to rebuild their life, make them self-sustainable and help them live a better life.

That is the whole idea behind this fellowship program.

We announced ‘I am the Change’ fellowship during Everest 9th anniversary by Oct, 2015.

I am the change Fellowship is a 2 year paid fellowship program for any undergraduate or postgraduate professionals with 0 to 20 years of job experience. During the fellowship period, every fellow will be allocated a unique project in the educational sector which they need to complete within their fellowship period.

The idea behind the fellowship program is to encourage top talents in the country to dedicate 2 years for the country. That way, we can channelize the talents and potential towards the needy and increase the pace of change.

We are planning to take 10 fellows in 2016 and we have decided to make one of the fellow to work on rehabilitation in the flood affected regions. All the fellows will also get a monthly stipend of Rs 15,000.

If you are interested to apply for this fellowship, please mail to info@teameverestindia.org

If you are interested to sponsor for this fellowship initiative, please mail to info@teameverestindia.org . Donors can make one time donation or a monthly donation with minimum amount being Rs 100.

For more details about this fellowship, please check www.iamthechange.in/fellowship

For any queries, please whatsapp or call to +91 89399 12365.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the Change you wish to see in this world”.

It is time to be the change. It is time to tell ‘I am the Change’.

Come and be part of our initiative. Let us make a difference.

Happy Volunteering!

Team Everest in 2014

8

Dear Volunteers,

Happy New Year.  2014 has been a great year for Team Everest. There was active participation from many of our volunteers and we clocked 13,000+ volunteering hours in 2014. Impact at various levels has been created through our volunteering work. I would like to thank all the volunteers who are the reason behind the service we are doing as a team.

I would like to cover the key initiatives which we did in 2014 to look back and cherish the moments we had:

Student Scholarship:

One of the key initiatives of Team Everest for the past 8 years is Student Scholarship, especially college students. We select students who are financially poor, but academically scored very good marks. We give more preference to students who are parent less and single parented student. In 2014, we sponsored for 18 college students. Thanks to all the donors without whom, this is not possible.

Walk to Cycle

Team Everest donated 64 bicycles to students from villages of Tiruvannamalai Dt. We selected students based on 3 criteria. The student should have scored 60% consistently, should walk a minimum of 3kms every day to school and who are from financially poor background. The total cost of 64 bicycles came to Rs 2,50,805.

First Penguin Club:

Penguins use to go for hunting fish. They need to jump from Icebergs into the water where there are predators. So many penguins do not dare to jump first. So, there will be one First Penguin who dares to jump first. We encourage the children to be first penguin.

Through this initiative, we help students take risks and not worry about failures. Also as part of this club, we conduct soft skill training, digital literacy and basic Spoken English classes to our Everest Scholarship students. The First Penguin Club events are happening for the past 1 year on alternative Sundays.

Computers for ALL:

It is an initiative of our young volunteers who are from School. Vanshika, who is a plus-2 student decided to use her father’s office which is on holiday during weekends for a social cause. The office had 6 desktops which is unused during weekends. We identified a corporation school nearby and enrolled students for the computer class. Currently a batch of 12 students is learning computers regularly. Vanshika and her school friends were the regular volunteers at the center.

What a way to start volunteering at a young age?? Hats off Vanshika and team. You guys were real role model for rest of the youngsters.

Gurukulam:

A group of volunteers from Hyderabad spotted a slum while going to their office which is an IT company. A lot of children from this slum were begging near the IT park. The team decided to change the fate of these children and started to visit the slum every day.

Because of our regular visit to the slum, 10 children who were begging earlier were put into school now. Hats off to volunteers!

Child Fest:

Child Fest is an inter study center competition among the children of Everest study centers in 9 villages of Tiruvannamalai District, Tamilnadu. Singing, Dance, Chess, Story Telling, Drawing, Carrom, Chess, Quiz and Sudoku competitions were conducted during Child fest -2014. 300 students from 9 villages participated in this edition!

Ebay Opportunity Hack:

Team Everest won the Ebay Opportunity Hack conducted on Oct-12, 2014. A group of techie volunteers coded to build an E-receipt and donation management tool which can be used not only by Team Everest but also by all NGO’s. This tool will help NGO’s save admin cost, save time in writing receipts and most importantly, it will help save paper since they will move from hard copy receipts to soft copies. Ebay will help in bringing this tool to market once the complete tool becomes ready. A group of volunteers coded for 36 hours at a go with no sleep at all. They showed what true passion is all about!

Contest for a Cause (C4C):

C4C (Contest for a Cause) is a National Art-Technology Fest, the first of its kind, conducted by Team Everest during Daan Utsav. It is a 50 day contest that aims to provide a platform to people across the country to exhibit their artistic skills through an array of competitions to promote volunteerism. 100% of the prize money won by the volunteers goes to a social cause.

The C4C 2014 edition received great participation from volunteers across the country. We got some amazing short films, drawings and photographs as part of this initiative to promote volunteering. We will be setting up 69 libraries across India using the prize money donated through this initiative.

C4C-2014 Drawing contest 1st prize winning entry from School Category.
“Education for all”
Winner Details: JIDESH KUMARAN J, 12th Std, KAMALA NIKETAN MONTESSORI SCHOOL, Trichy, TamilNadu.

Contest for a Cause – Mesmerize 2014:

Team Everest organized Contest for a Cause (C4C) – Mesmerize dance contest along with the Chennai Global Shapers hub on Nov 9, 2014 in Chennai. 11 schools participated in the contest to win the championship. 100% of the prize money won by the students has been donated to a social cause.

In total, Rs. 2.5 lakhs has been raised through this initiative. Students donated their prize money of Rs 1,00,000 for this social cause! The idea behind C4C Mesmerize is to share the idea of ‘GIVING’ and ‘VOLUNTEERING’ at young age!

Mom Dad Community Center:

We converted our home in native in to a community center since both my mom and dad passed away. The home now has a computer center, yoga center and study center which will benefit 500+ students every year in the community.

We named it as ‘Mom Dad Community Center’ as the intention behind this home is to make every individual think about their parents and their contribution in their lives. Every child, every person who steps inside this home should understand the key role their parents played in their lives and give them due respect. Apart from playing a role of an educational hub, this home should stand as an inspiration to many and help them love their parents much more.

Help Desk Number:

We rolled out a Help Desk Number for Team Everest in 2014. You can reach out to Team Everest anytime at +91 89399 12365.

If you want to get our updates through Whatsapp, just whatsapp as ‘Update Me’ to the same number. You will be added to our broadcast list and you will receive 3 to 4 messages per week. Since it is a broadcast list, your number is not exposed to other volunteers and it stays private securing your privacy.

Press Coverage:

Media has been very kind to Team Everest in 2014. We had 10+ instances of coverage about Team Everest in newspapers like Times of India, Deccan Chronicle, The Indian express in 2014.

The South Indian Channel – Makkal TV did a 30 mins program about Team Everest mesmerize event as well. All this shows that our good work is now recognized by media which helps us reach out to more new volunteers.

Thanks to all the press and media who were spreading the positive and good news in our country!

In Chennai Deccan Chronicle 28-Oct-2014

What we have mentioned above is just the key activities we did in 2014. Apart from the above mentioned key initiatives, we have hundreds of other events which includes old age home visit, blood donation, visiting schools to conduct classes, conduct competition etc. Thanks to all the volunteers who made 2014 memorable.

I’m sure that with your support in 2015, we can touch many more lives.

First Volunteer Speech during Everest 8

5

Blog Post by Team Everest Founder and First Volunteer – Karthee Vidya

Every year, I look forward to speak about Team Everest journey during the Everest anniversary. For 2014, it happened on October-12, when Team Everest celebrated its 8th anniversary.

Here is a brief summary about my speech:

The journey so far:

The inspiration behind me for starting Team Everest is the differences I saw in my real life between a school in rural and urban area. Till my 10th standard I studied in a village in Tiruvannamalai Dt and I did my Plus-1 and Plus-2 in SBOA, Anna nagar, Chennai. The difference in quality of education struck me immediately. That is the moment, I decided to do something back to the society.

Started in 2006:

I started Team Everest as an individual in 2006. Looking back now, we have 8500+ Volunteers and touched the lives of 8,00,000 students in a bigger or smaller. It is no more about ‘I’ now. It’s ‘We’. We have a huge volunteer pool who wants to make a difference and bring a change in lives of people. Volunteers are our strength now. It is a sweet and memorable 8 years journey.

Key Initiatives in 2013-2014:

There are around 720 activities which were organized by Team Everest from October-2013 to September-2014. That is an average of 2 activities per day which is phenomenal.

Student Scholarship:

Team Everest had provided scholarship to 600 School students and 200 college students so far. In our current batch, there are 18 college students studying. Many of them are single parented or have lost their parents at young age.

Study Center:

Team Everest is running 10 free study centers in 10 villages of Tiruvannamalai Dt reaching out to 300 students. Because of our regular intervention, the reading levels have improved by 30%.

Gurukulam:

A group of volunteers from Hyderabad spotted this slum while going to their office which is an IT company. A lot of children from this slum were begging near the IT park. The team decided to change the fate of these children and started to visit the slum every day.

Because of our regular visit to the slum, 10 children who were begging earlier were put into school now. Hats off to volunteers!

Contest for a Cause:

C4C (www.contestforacause.org) is a National Art-Technology Fest, the first of its kind, conducted by Team Everest, an NGO with its focus to promote Volunteering. C4C is launched on Oct-2 and will happen till Nov-22, 2014.

It is an annual initiative that aims to provide a platform for people across the country to exhibit their artistic and technical skills through an array of competitions with a prime focus on promoting Volunteerism. 100% of the prize money won by the volunteers goes to a social cause, thus making an impact in the society. We have chosen Book bucket challenge as our cause this year and will be setting up 100 libraries across India as part of this initiative. More details can be seen at www.contestforacause.org

Kindness Challenge:

We did a ‘Kindness Challenge’ initiative where a list of 10 kindness acts has been mailed to volunteers and volunteers can choose any 5 kindness acts to perform. Around 250 signed up for this initiative, performing 363 kindness acts clocking 500 volunteering hours. We will be doing this in a much bigger scale in upcoming years.

Walk to Cycle:

Team Everest donated 64 cycles worth Rs 2,36,800 to students who walk a minimum of 3Kms every day. The students are carefully selected from multiple villages to ensure that the cycle goes to the one who is the most deserving!

Measuring 2014:

We clocked 13,000 volunteering hours from Oct-2013 to Sep-2014. 1059 unique volunteers participated in 720 activities, touching the lives of 30,279 people. Well done friends!

If you want to understand, how big is 13,000 volunteering hours, think about this – If a man started walking from Kanyakumari at 0.4KM per hour, he can go to Kashmir and come back to Kanyakumari again within 13,000 hours. That’s the amount of time our volunteers have spent in the past 1 year!

Here are some of the upcoming initiatives of Team Everest in progress:

C4C Mesmerize:

C4C Mesmerize is a dance program, the first of its kind, conducted by Team Everest to provide a platform for students from various schools across Chennai to exhibit their artistic skills through dance to promote volunteerism. The total prize money for the contest is Rs 1,00,000 and the winner of the contest will be donating the entire prize money for a social cause. Also, 100% of the funds raised from ticket sales of this event will be donated to set up libraries.

Team Everest has partnered with Pratham Books and 17000ft foundation to set up 50 Libraries in Ladakh region using the funds raised through this event. To buy ticket for this event, click here.

Mom Dad Community Center:

This is one of my close to heart initiative. I’m converting the home where we lived for 30+ years into a free computer center. Additionally, the home will also have a free study center and free yoga center in Arni, Tiruvannamalai dt, Tamilnadu. 500 students will be benefitted by this center every year.

My mother passed away in 2011 because of cancer and my father passed away in 2013 due to Heart attack. It is worthy to mention that both of them donated their body to Medical college for students to learn during lab period (To know about their body donation, check this link – http://bit.ly/kartheedad). In order to honor them, we decided to convert the home where they lived as a community center for the general public. The total cost of setting up free computer center, study center and yoga center costs Rs 3.5 Lakhs. If you would like to contribute for this cause, click here.

The center will be inaugurated on Dec-20, 2014.

Smile 100:

This is another ambitious initiative by Team Everest. We are planning to adopt 100 kids who have no parents or single parented by 2015 and provide them quality education. We would like to support them till they finish school, college and ready to get employed. The idea is to give best of the best education to the poorest of the poor. Let us together make them smile. 100 smiles are waiting ahead!

We are evaluating the cost of this initiative and at the same time trying to get as many monthly donors as possible who can sponsor for a child. Minimum monthly donation is Rs 50 per month. If you wish to be a monthly donor, click here.

Let this journey continue forever. Let us spread kindness. Let us create smiles. Let us volunteer atleast once a month. If you are a volunteer, be proud of it. If you are not, be one now!!

Keep volunteering. Let’s keep making a difference!

We also had a stall to create awareness about our online C4C initiative – www.contestforacause.org

The event started with a Mime from Anakaputhur school students. It was an interesting 7 Mins to create awareness about Chennai, taking care of the city’s heritage and keep it clean. Volunteers had a good laugh during the entire 7 Mins.

Thanks to our volunteer Venkat who regularly visit the school to train the students on Mime.

The next part of the event is when, Karthee Vidya – Founder and First Volunteer of Team Everest explained the journey of Everest in the past 8 years. Team Everest is proud to say that it touched the lives of 8,00,000 students through its various initiative in a small or big way.

Team Everest clocked 13,000+ Volunteering hours from Oct 2013 to Sep 2014. To understand the amount of time invested, if a man started walking from Kanyakumari at 0.4KM per hour, he can go to Kashmir and come back to Kanyakumari again within 13,000 hours. That’s the amount of time our volunteers have spent in the past 1 year!

We will write a separate blog post explaining in detail about the initiatives Karthee Vidya had covered during his speech.

We introduced a new award called ‘I am the Change’ this year to motivate and recognize key volunteers who makes a difference with their time and passion.

This year ‘I am the Change’ award winners were Lakshmi and Praveen.

Lakshmi was the incharge of our Hyderabad initiative ‘Gurukulam’ where we took regular classes in a slum and made sure 10 students join the school who were begging earlier. Lakshmi alone has visited this slum more than 250 times last year spending most of her coffee and lunch breaks with kids to teach them.  Team Everest is very proud of her commitment.

She was not able to attend the event due to a personal commitment and our Team Everest Hyderabad Incharge – Manikanta Kamatam collected the award on behalf of Lakshmi.

Our next ‘I am the Change’ winner is Praveen Selvaraj. He organized more than 25 visits to various schools in Kanchipuram Dt engaging more than 400 volunteers and conducted various events to 5000+ students in the past one year. He is also the person incharge for launching our online contest – www.contestforacause.org on time this year. Irrespective of his workload in office, he never compromised to volunteer and serve the society. His commitment is way beyond words. Team Everest is very proud of his service to the society.

This year, we made our ‘I am the Change’ volunteers to cut the traditional Anniversary cake along with our other Everest volunteers.

Next is our speech by our Special guest ‘Malvika Iyer’. She blew away everyone with her speech. Her confidence filled the room. When she finished her speech, there was pin drop silence in the hall. Volunteers were still thinking, how an earth, a girl be so positive??

Malvika Iyer on stage. Malvika shared her story of determination and spirit. She spoke creating an inclusive society which gives space for physically challenged to express themselves.

A small memento from Team Everest for Malvika and her mom. She is a great inspiration to all of us.

Post her speech, we recognized the companies who are supporting Team Everest for a long time. Without their support, our journey would have been much tougher.

Zoho – Zoho was a great supporter for Team Everest and they really helped us scale Team Everest to new heights. Their products were so cool, easy to use and for organizations like Team Everest, it is a boon. Thank you so much for offering your products to Team Everest. Without you, we would have found it difficult to scale!

Lion Bridge – Lion Bridge supports Team Everest for the past 2 years by providing computers for labs, donating skills of their designers for various collaterals designs. C4C 2013 website design was completely done by Lion Bridge volunteers and they helped Team Everest with skill based volunteering. Thank you so much Lion Bridge. You made our life easy with your support so many times!

Vinayak Infotech – They are our recent IT partners in 2014. The team is very young, energetic and have a passion to serve. They designed our entire C4C 2014 website – www.contestforacause.org . They have a great team who responds quickly to queries, write code fast and fix bugs as soon as we intimate them. They treated us like their customer though they offered their service at no cost to us. That is a sign of a good culture that prevails inside the company. We could not have thought about C4C 2014 without their support. Thank you Vinayak Infotech. You guys were awesome!

Caillio Technologies – We could never forget them. They were the first to buy Everest domain and host our website – www.teameverestindia.org on their server space. They were supporting us for the past 3 years without charging a single rupee. It is a small company with big dreams and much bigger passion to serve others. They have never hesitated to support us irrespective of how busy they are. The founders – Punith and Vinith who were brothers are of great support to us and they are just a phone call away for any support required. Thank you friends. You will be remembered for ever for all the support you have provided to us!

Note: This is the first time we are meeting them in person ever. For the past 3 years, all the coordination happened over phone and mails and we never met them. That shows the amount of commitment and respect they showed for us!

Next on stage was our Special Guest Deepika. She is the first charted accountant from Little flower school which is a school or hearing impaired.

Her relative spoke about Deepika and how she managed  to work hard to come up in life. It was a huge morale booster for all those who came for the event. Not to forget about the standing ovation she got from the crowd.

We gave a small token of appreciation to Deepika for coming and motivating us. She is surely an inspiration for all.

Deepika also gave away the ‘12/365’ certificates to Everest volunteers who volunteered atleast once a month in 2013-2014 period.

Team Everest Founder and First Volunteer – Karthee Vidya took the stage to explain about Contest for a Cause – www.contestforacause.org to the volunteers. This year, the total prize money is Rs 5,00,000 and Team Everest is taking up Book Bucket Challenge to set up 100 libraries across India as part of the C4C prize money. He cnouraged volunteers to tag their friends in FB who is good at any of these – Drawing, Writing, Photography, Short film making and poster design.

We also recognized the key volunteers who volunteers consistently and also shows leadership qualities by taking responsibility for various Everest initiatives. Team Everest secretary Rajkumar recognized them with ‘Thanks from the Heart’ memento.

We ended the event with a national anthem.

It was an anniversary to remember. The Everest journey so far is so memorable, guests were inspiring and volunteers are just awesome. It is definitely one of the best anniversary of Team Everest.

We hope that it would have helped many to volunteer more.

Let’s keep volunteering atleast once month (12/365).

Let’s keep making a difference. Let this journey continue for ever.

V-Build

‘V-Build’ Challenge!

11

Dear friends,

With a base of 6500+ volunteers in Everest where majority of them I have never met till now.

Two things connect all of us – ‘Passion to help others’ and the other is ‘Internet’ :)

Way back in 2006, when I started Everest, I was all alone and never felt that we will grow so big and do hundreds of events every year touching thousands of lives. Internet played a key role in connecting all of us. It is only through mails that everyone interacted. Few years later, we started using blogs to post updates and interact. Now, Team Everest has its own facebook page and twitter account.

I am proud to say that the latest technical advancement in Team Everest is our own Android application which is built by our volunteer and is available in Google play store now.

As we all agree to the fact that internet being the key connector among all of us, it’s now time to put in more efforts and make it work for Team Everest.

We have recently formed a core technical team that takes care of Everest technology related requests. Considering the passion of volunteers to help others and also in view of creating an opportunity to do what they do, we have made all preparations to launch our first technical initiative – ‘V-Build

Through this initiative, we want to revamp one of our existing website – www.everestserveindia.org . It is YOU – the volunteers who are going to rebuild the site.

The whole challenge comprises of 7 milestones.

With the completion of every milestone, Team Everest will donate furniture to a classroom in a school. At the end of 7 milestones, we would have furnished the entire school.

We will be revealing the milestones one by one in the upcoming weeks.

If you possess any of the following skills, you can be part of this challenge:

  1.  layout/wireframe design
  2.  HTML/Java developer
  3.  Testing professional
  4.  Writing content for the website
  5.  Photoshop to create UI, images for the website
A group of volunteers are going to collaborate to build a single website for Team Everest. Are you game?

to be part of this ‘V-Build’ challenge and help a school get furnished.

Regards,

Kartheeban
